seeking:
Non-fiction stories and/or images from Queer* people about their experiences living in developing countries.
be:
Revealing, vulnerable, reflective and engaging. Optional: raunchy, explicit and/or outrageous!
for:
The Queer Here Blog and the first issue of Queer Here’s zine.
from:
Locals, expatriates, volunteers and tourists with queer experiences in Bangladesh, Cambodia, East Timor, Fiji, Ghana, Indonesia, Kenya, Mongolia, Philippines, PNG, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Thailand, Tonga, Vanuatu or Vietnam (or beyond!). Writers can remain anonymous if preferred.
why?
To showcase the diversity of queer cultures in developing countries (and the diversity in how people experience these cultures) while offering advice to fellow Queers* (and friends) who may be planning overseas adventures. Queer Here also intends to contribute to discussions around human rights, focusing on sexual reproductive health and gender and sexuality equality.
some guiding questions that may help you write your story…
- What’s it like being queer where you are? What challenges (including laws/restrictions) and rewards have you faced?
- How do you view people’s attitudes towards relationships, marriage, monogamy, polyamory, (safer) sex, gender roles, families… and so on?
- In your experience, how do the local community respond to queer people? (At work, on the street, at play?)
- What tips can you give queer travelers? (from safety and security advice and queer friendly spaces to cruising spots and where to find condoms)
- Any interesting romance/sex stories to share? thanks! Writers contribute on a voluntary basis and will be sent a personalised hard copy of the zine as a gesture of thanks.
